Dr. Thomas Renard

I am currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Egmont Institute (EGMONT - Royal Institute for International Relations), a think tank based in Brussels. I focus on (counter-)terrorism and (counter-)radicalization in Belgium and in Europe. Recent projects focussed notably on returning foreign fighters, and on radicalisation in prison. I presented my research notably at the United Nations Security Council, at the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED) or at the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF). I also participated to hearings of the European Parliament and the French Senate. I have published in respected journals, such as International Affairs, Global Affairs or Cambridge Review of International Affairs, among others.

I am an Adjunct Professor at the Vesalius College, and I was a PhD student at Ghent University. In 2012, I became a member of the Young Atlanticist Program, convened by the Atlantic Council of the US. I was a founding member of the Friday Group until 2017, a group of young Belgians from diverse horizons gathering to reflect on strategic and major societal issues, supported by the King Baudouin Foundation, as well as a member of the Korea-Europe Next Generation Policy Expert Forum (2015)
