GIES conducts research into six distinctive research areas:

Climate, Energy and Environment

As we are globally transgressing several of the 'planetary boundaries', GIES aims to incorporate questions of climate change, energy and the environment within global politics and international relations.

Global Injustices

GIES conducts critical research on development, building on strong traditions of combining field research in the 'Global South', within the EU and in international organisations.

Geopolitics and Strategy

In a world that has returned to great power rivalry, understanding the grand strategy of these powers is crucial. How they interact will determine the course of world politics in the first half of the 21st century.

GIES has a long tradition of studying global and European governance institutions and processes.

The EU and the World

GIES' strong focus on regionalism and interregionalism is pinpointed by our prominent focus on the European Union, as well as other supra- and international institutions and cooperations.

International Political Economy

GIES has a strong research tradition in international and comparative political economy, examining the interplay between economic and political forces in the global and European order.
