What is the BA in East European Languages and Cultures?
The programme of East European Languages and Cultures focuses both on Russia and South East Europe, more specifically the Slavic cultures on the Balkans. The emphasis lies not only on language acquisition, but also on the study of culture in all its aspects – literature & (cultural) history – and society. Particular attention is paid to the historical development of the Eastern European languages, cultures and regions and countries.
What does the course look like?
The programme is a combination of a language and culture study. You learn (at least) two Eastern European languages – the keys to the Eastern European cultures you will be focusing on. In the first year, you start with Russian. In the second year, you choose a second, South Slavic language (Bulgarian or Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian; you can also study both South Slavic languages and Slovene as an extra). Besides these living languages, you will also study Old Church Slavonic – the classical language of Eastern Europe.
